Taylor of Old Bond Street Avocado Shaving Cream Review

A lot of people nominated TOBS Avocado as one of the ten best shaving creams on the Blade & Badger forums so I decided to give it a shot. A 5.3 ounce tub runs for $16.50 on Amazon (with free shipping), so it’s definitely a bit pricey. But, since you only need a pea-sized amount to give you a great lather and the tub will probably give you 75-100 shaves (that’s works out to around $0.15-$0.20 per shave), it’s actually fairly reasonable.
The ingredients include water, stearic acid, myristic acid, potassium hydroxide, coconut acid, glycerin, thriethanolamine, fragrance, sodium hydroxide, persea, gratissima, avocado oil, butylphenyl, methylpropional, geraniol, and citronellol. The acids should help help make your facial hair softer and the glycerin and oils provide the lubrication.
The first thing you notice when you open the tub is the pleasant (but really mild) avocado aroma. I soaked my Omega shaving brush in hot water for a bit, gently tapped it on the TOBS shaving cream and then started building up a lather in my shaving bowl. I had to use a surprisingly little amount (even compared to Proraso) to get a luxurious lather. The lather went on really, really thick but it actually started to dry up a bit towards the end of the shave. The blame probably lands squarely on my shoulders since I like a concentrated lather and generally like to put in less water than other people do. A few more drops of water should probably keep the cream well-hydrated throughout the entire shave. Nevertheless, TOBS Avocado is a great shaving cream and I highly recommend it!
